K9 Team Competition

This past Saturday, Kevin and the kids and I traveled to Waxahachie to go see the K9 dog competition.  It was a service project for Jack and the Young Marines, but it was fun entertainment.  The weather was cool, and we even got a sunburn even though it was somewhat cloudy.  We arrived at the rodeo complex at 7:45 a.m. so that Jack could get going with the YM.  The events didn't start until 10:00, so Caroline and I did some exploring.  That was a nice place out there.  It had a walking path, a butterfly garden, and a "Lamb Barn" where the 4H club was housed.

The first part of the event was for the novice dogs.  That was cute because these dogs are working to be K9 dogs.  One dog, Rusty, had trouble staying.  The dogs were supposed to stay while their handler walked a distance away from them.  Poor Rusty just couldn't stay, and after awhile instead of walking to his handler he started belly crawling.  Like that wouldn't get him in trouble.  We broke for lunch and then experienced the barking contest and the neatest trick contest (which had a winner only because there was one entry).

The Advanced part of the competition was cool.  The dogs were amazing and we saw several examples on how on target these dogs have to be and stay in order to do their jobs.  One dog raced the distance to get to the "perpetrator" before the guy could make it to the car!  Even when the dog had the car door sort of shut on him, he didn't let go of the bad guy.  That's dedication for you!

All in all it was a great day.  I noticed that all of the German shepherds were given orders in German, the Dutch Shepherd was given order in Dutch, and they all were amazing dogs.  I'd hate to encounter any of them on the street.
