About 3 years ago, Jdhteach and I moved into a neighborhood that we'd been eyeing since we got married. The houses are nice, dating to the mid 1980's. The schools that the neighborhood feeds into are good schools, and really there's not much outside traffic. My sister lives in a house that has a pretty busy street that cuts through the neighborhood and connects two major streets. So people tend to take the "shortcut" often. Not our neighborhood. It's nice and relatively quiet. The general neighborhood is Republican, and I believe we even had a gentleman from two streets over run for Congress - on the Republican ticket. He even got a nod in the homeowner's association newsletter encouraging people to vote - for him of course.
Anyway, back to our neighbors. For the most part, the people that live on our street are friendly. We talk when we're all outside and the kids tend to play with each other. There is one set of neighbors who have not been the friendliest. We were able to piss them off the first week we moved into our house. Apparently, we let our dogs out too early in the morning (7:00 am) and according to them our dogs barked constantly. For awhile, we got nasty notes in our mailbox about exactly what time the dogs should go out, and occasionally we spotted police cars outside our house "listening" for our constantly barking dogs. Oddly enough, we never got ticketed and it was pointed out that the "constantly" barking dog was the one that lived behind us. The notes stopped after I put a nice "thank you" note in their mailbox citing the city's ordinance on noise levels and times.
The man who lives there is generally pleasant, but the woman is downright chilly. I've only really spoken to her once. That was when Jason wanted to leave, but she'd pulled into our drive way and was talking to our neighbor who lived behind us.
With election time near, we decided to show our support for our Democrat candidate by placing a sign in the front yard. I sure bet we disgusted them even more with that sign!
Hah! Here's to free speech and pissed off neighbors.

I'm glad you're voting Democrat :) Those neighbours are going to be annoying to everyone apparently so good on you for not caring and doing exactly what you want. I mean really, nasty notes in the mailbox? If they were true grownups they would personally talk to you all about what their concerns were. Ughh, it's like apartment living with them.
That is funny. I did not know about the thank you note.
