As I awaited the beginning of the Rose Bowl Parade yesterday, I watched the end of the morning news. Of course, there was a segment on New Year's Resolutions. At the top of the list, of course, was "Getting Healthy". Since that is a constant goal of mine, I decided to set a different one. This one is, "Do my work at work." Now, a good majority of people would laugh and say, "Where else would you do your work?" But any teacher in America would say, "I hear ya!".
Sometimes I dream of switching jobs, and taking a job where I could simply leave the work on my desk when I left. In that job, if I got sick, I'd be able to go and get work and bring it home to do. A job that didn't mean that I would need to get work ready, so 44 young people wouldn't lose a day of instruction.
So this year, it's my goal to do as much work as I can at school, prioritize what's important for my students and I, and get it done at school. I don't expect to be able to do it all at once. It'll be a learning and discovering process. However, it has to be possible, it needs to be possible.
Because not only is my health a factor, but so is my family. Other educators will understand what I mean when I say, "A big part of it is for my health." I guess, then, that one of my New Year's Resolutions is about my getting healthy. Or should I say, it's about staying healthy.
