so I'm venting here. The last couple of nights have been tortuous over at my house. My daughter's allergies are in full swing and she has this nasty cough (Yes we've tried just about everything to help her - cough medicine, allergy medicine, Vicks rub, vicks vapor) but we can't get rid of it. So periodically throughout the night, she coughs horribly and wakes up crying. So either my husband or I will go and try something new to help her get back to sleep.
Last night was about 100 times worse because my son woke up and had to go to the bathroom. For some reason, Jack comes into our bathroom in the middle of the night or early in the morning (he turns on every light in the process). I thought maybe he just had to go to the bathroom quickly and then would return to his room, but shortly after he went in there I heard crying. It turned out he was constipated and his stomach was hurting something horrible AND when he finally had the movement it hurt. Normally Jack is not a constipated kid, so I asked him if he had to go to the bathroom at school. He said that sometimes he did so I thought it was that he was holding it until he got home.
But it turns out that he has 1 emergency pass that he can use in class to go to the bathroom when the entire class is not going. The rules in the class are that if he uses more than one emergency pass he has to change his color. He's been on blue this entire six weeks, but it turns out that he's been gradually getting constipated because he's been holding it sometimes when he has to go more than once. I think he'll get back in the groove of only going to the bathroom once a day once we've had a chance to get back on schedule, but for now he'll be on green because he has to use more than one emergency pass. This made me a little mad when I found out today that he's on green because he had to use more than one emergency pass to go to the bathroom. Both times he had a movement (mainly because I gave him some medicine to help his constipation last night), but still had to change his color.
That irritates me to no end. I mean, if a kid has to go to the bathroom he has to go to the bathroom. I understand if a kid goes to the bathroom to avoid work, and unfortunately I see both sides every day in my classroom. I tend to be quite lenient about going to the bathroom, and if I see that someone is going more than usual we sit down and talk to mom and dad to find out if there's something going on that needs to be addressed.
But change a color because a kid's gotta poop. Gees!

I talked with Jack. He got his color change for something else.
From experience I have found that the school is unwilling to change their rules because...that's their rule. And if you question it it only makes the teacher pissed. I say drop it and move on to bigger fish. If that is why he gets his color changed...who cares.
To prevent this from happening just tell the teacher that Jack is having some tummy issues that may require him to use the bathroom more than normal for the next couple of days. Then it is up to the teacher if she decides Jack is abusing the bathroom privilage.
My first statement may be unfair. It blankets the school when in reality I only have experience in dealing with that one teacher. This year's teacher seems to be a polar opposite from last years.
