Baby no more

I'm slowly coming to the realization that I don't have babies anymore (not that that's totally bad). Last night Caroline lost a tooth. I was a little surprised because her brother didn't start losing teeth until he was 6 1/2 (but once they started coming out they were quick - 4 in a span of 3 months).

My mom came over for a little bit last night and took them to get ice cream. When she brought them back Jack mentioned that Caroline's tooth was coming in. Confused because she hadn't lost any, I checked and sure enough her permanent tooth was poking through and her baby tooth was extremely wiggly. So we went in and got a paper towel and went to see Dad.

I really love the way Jason pulls teeth. He does it like his dad, and boy do I wish my teeth had been pulled that way. It seems a lot less painful. He pinches the tooth at the gum and just squeezes until the tooth pops out.

We did this last night with Caroline, and she needed assurances more than Jack ever did (maybe it's a boy thing). Anyway, I got down and let her hug me and she faced Jason. As Jason squeezed her tooth, she squeezed my neck. Of course Jack's over on the floor saying, "Don't worry Caroline it won't hurt long." Thanks a lot, I thought. When Jason finally got it out, she didn't even realize it, until she stuck her tongue through her teeth and felt the blood. She got this HUGE smile on her face and said, "That is SO AWESOME!!" Of course her speech was slurred due to the blood filling in. So we went and rinsed her mouth out.

Then the onslaught of questions about the Tooth Fairy started. How will she get in? Why can't I see her? How do you know what she looks like? Will she leave my tooth so I can show it to my class? Etc. We answered all questions like we did the Santa Claus questions, we just inserted "Tooth Fairy" instead of "Santa Claus". Jack even pointed out that some of his friends think the Tooth Fairy doesn't exist. My answer to that was, "Jack, when you lose your tooth do you get money?" Yes. "So the Tooth Fairy exists."

Both kids got money this morning, Jack just didn't get as much as Caroline. The Tooth Fairy gave Jack thirty cents because right before bed, Jack went to see Caroline and said, "Caroline you were very brave. You're one of the bravest girls I know." I wanted to reward him for the positive comments he made.

Caroline plans to take her tooth to her pre-K class today and show it off. She's so proud that she's becoming a "big girl."

I am too, sort of.

very cool. i am so proud of jack and caroline. they are a great team and i love them so much! an early memory of them is when we went to the zoo. jack was pushing caroline in a stroller and would give anyone the hairy eyeball who he thought looked at her too much. he's always been a good brother.
as for the tooth fairy. i still believe in her. i think she looks like tinkerbell. she's little and fast and has alot of work to do!
