The Greatness of WiiFit!

For a little bit now, Jack has said that some kids make fun of him because he's fat. Now, Jack is not fat. I know what you're thinking, "Your his mom, of course you don't think he's fat." But he really isn't fat. He's a Huffman for goodness sakes! Huffman men are NOT small. Jack, we've said is built like his Pa, and that's thick. He's pretty tall for an 8 year old, he's about 4' 8 1/2". Once I talked to Jack, it turns out that only 2 people make fun of his weight:1) a kid in his class who's short (my daughter is taller than him) 2) a kid in the neighborhood that is in 4th grade yet plays with a 2nd grader. After talking about the boys who make fun of him, we've talked about ways to handle when people say things about him that are a) not true and b) mean. I think he has a pretty good handle on it.

For some time I've wanted a WiiFit but they've been really hard to find. I finally found one yesterday at Target. I bought it and brought it home. I thought we could put it together and play around with it that night. I told Jack that I bought it and he ran out to the car, got it out, set up and that forced us to set up our Mii's about 4 hours earlier than I'd wanted.

I did the set up first so the kids could watch and see how it worked. When it came to having the computer game create my character to look like my weighty self it did a pretty good job. I'm not fat, but I've got some weight around the stomach. Basically, the program did a good job depicting me. Then it was Jack's turn. He had some awesome center of balance. Then we had to enter his height and birthdate. It finally weighed him and made his character look like his BMI and other information. When it was all said and done he grew slightly but wasn't as big as I was. He looked at me and said, "Hmm. I'm not fat am I?" BINGO!!!! Thank God for the WiiFit! He got to see that he's not fat. He's just about right for his height and his weight. He's not strong, but he quickly got to work on that. He spend the next 45 minutes playing with the games. Caroline's character looks pretty good. She grew just a little bit, but not a lot. she likes to do the balancing games. She likes to work on the yoga poses with me.

Jack is really taking this to heart. We went and got McDonald's pancakes this morning and he got a small Coke. At lunch I asked him if he wanted a soft drink and he said he didn't. He wanted water. Last night he was hungry before he went to bed, so he got an apple. I was really proud of him.

Maybe this is a good thing. Not just for me, but for the rest of the family.
