It's Time to Face the Inevitable Part 2

Today was Jack's first official flag football game. He was a little worried that it wouldn't happen because Hurricane Ike was in the area. So far we've had wind gusts and light rain, but that's it. I explained to Jack that if it rained a little bit, they wouldn't cancel the game. But they would reschedule if it got dangerous for everybody. He was pretty excited that he might get to play in the rain. And play in the rain he did.

The game started and we noticed that Jack was on offense (they had an offense and a defense squad, but they switched it each quarter). He was the center and got to hike the ball to the quarterback. I must say he did quite well. He did not complain about the rain and he only once tried to convince me he didn't need his mouth guard (that didn't fly). His team ended up winning 13-7 which was nice. At the end of the game they got stars based on their performance on the field. Jack got a gold star for good sportsmanship. He had helped kids put their flags back on regardless of which team they were on, and one time he even sat with a kid who got hurt until the coach could come and check him out (it was a kid on the other team). All in all it was a good experience. Jack absolutely enjoyed himself and didn't loose focus until a few minutes left in the game. That's saying something due to the fact that when he played soccer if he wasn't out on the field he was chasing bugs around on the sidelines.

My father and mother-in-law came to watch the game. This was the first sporting event they came to where they stayed the whole game. My father-in-law played football in high school and at TCU back in the 50's and 60's, and Jack is built just like him. As we were standing on the sidelines watching the game, my father-in-law said that Jack looked like a natural center. I had no idea you could tell that by looking at him, but when I mentioned it to Jdhteach he knew exactly what I was talking about. Apparently, when Jack bends down and gets into his four point stance, his back is completely in a straight line and his knees don't go over his ankles. This means that most, if not all ,of his power is in his upper legs and he can get off the line faster.

It's time to face the inevitable, I've got a footballer on my hands.
