I've been watching the Olympics when I can, and have noticed a pattern. Women's beach volleyball is shown mostly in the mornings, swimming and gymnastics in the evenings. I get that swimming and gymnastics are popular sports, so I understand the primetime slot. I have watched the beach volleyball matches, when they're on, and have noticed a few differences between the men's and women's matches.
1) In men's games, the men serve the ball until they're serve is broken (which means the other team scores a point). In women's games, they alternate serves. For example, the USA serves, then the other team, then the USA (regardless of who gets the point).
2) This is the big one: They're uniforms are WAY different. The women wear these binkinis that have to be tight or else sand gets in (which has to be very uncomfortable), but the me wear shirts and loose shorts. Hmmmmm.
I understand why someone might have come up with the different outfits. Women's sporting matches have historically drawn smaller crowds than men. So I guess the reasoning is, "Put them in bikinis and men will watch as well."
But for once, I'd like the saying, "What's good for the goose is good for the gander." phrase to apply.
Here's to the a uniform change in men's beach volleyball: SPEEDOS!
