I'm reminded of a time...

As I was talking with the kids tonight, I was reminded of a day 16 years ago that changed my life....

It was the Friday of the first week of school, August 16th to be exact, and I had a date with a really cute guy.  I was teaching third grade at Lake Highlands Elementary and he was teaching fifth grade at Skyview.  We had already had one unofficial date, but this was to be considered the first "official" date.  Silly, I know.

I rushed home to get ready and he picked me up and we went to dinner.  After dinner, we decided to go to a movie and discovered the one we wanted to watch didn't start until 10:30 that evening.  "No problem," I thought.  We window shopped until it was time for the movie, but as we sat down and waited for the movie to start I began to doze.  I realized, when it became obvious I was falling asleep, that maybe setting this date for the first Friday of the first week of school may not have been the best idea I've ever had.  I really tried to stay awake, but found I really couldn't remember half of what the movie was about when it was over.  I was able to stay awake on the way back to my apartment, but knew after Jason left that I probably wouldn't see him again.  I'd made a REALLY bad impression by almost falling asleep on our date, and  I was SURE he'd never ask me out again.

Turns out he was in the same boat.  He didn't know I was dozing because he was dozing too!  He was sure that after the date, I'd NEVER go out with him again because I'd think he was boring.  It couldn't have been that bad.  That first date was in August of 1996, Jason had the ring by the middle of October, he proposed in December, and we were married by May of 1997.  I guess the date didn't go that bad after all.

Wow!  We were really bad even back then.

The kids got a kick out of hearing how sad their parents were.  Jack even voiced what they were both thinking, "Gosh that's kinda sad mom. I guess you and dad were meant for each other after all."
